District Scout Camp

May 2009

So what makes a good District Scout Camp?

Good numbers for a start, plus Leaders who will help and put the time into the planning of the camp.

In the Gainsborough District we work closely and well with the Gainsborough District Guides and this was a good opportunity to work together with them to to make this camp even better.

Different events of the year were agreed upon and each Group went away to plan their own and then bring it to the Camp and run it for real.

The main activities provided by the District included a Climbing Wall, Canoe Training Pool, Catapults, Bouncy Castles, Camp Fire, Grass Sledges and Go Karts to name

but a few.  In the evenings the participants were entertained by a Disco.  Due to the fine weather the planned Cinema inside the building was not attended but this was to be expected.

Now one thing that was forgotten was that the events overlapped.  This ment that Saturday afternoon was Easter Sunday, Saturday evening was Halloween and also Christmas Eve, which mant Sunday was Christmas Day and Chinese New Year.  It all sounds complicated but it was fun.

Problems did arise when Scouts and Guides came in Halloween fancy dress to the reading of 'Twas the night before Christmas'.  The main marquee was decked out for Halloween, which was not suitable for Christmas Eve.  To get around this an outdoor fireplace built, complete with mantel.

A fire was lit in the hearth, carpet laid and late at night on a clear

warn night the 100 campers sat down around the fire eating hot dogs and drinking witches blood (from Halloween) to listen to the story.  The 'Star of Bethlehem' was also seen in the clear night sky above them and this made the evening more special.

Sunday started warm and bright and Christmas Day complete with the obligatory Christmas Tree's, Decorations and a visit from Santa made a strange sight on the hottest day so far this year.  To make things more complicated, the Chinese New Year Dragon made several appearances which added to the fun and confusion of the day.

To the Groups in the District who did not attend, you missed something that was fun and enjoyable to take part in, so next year make sure you attend.
